Call for young people…
Spoken Word Workshop with Dean Atta & Laila Sumpton
Saturday 3 March 2012
London Transport Museum
11.00 – 16.00 (lunch included)
Call out to young people aged 14 to 24 to join spoken word artists at London Transport Museum’s thought provoking creative word workshop inspired by the Museum’s Sense and the City: smart, connected and on the move exhibition.
Developed by the Museum’s Young Consultants, young people are invited to a FREE one day session to work with professional artists Dean Atta and Laila Sumpton from the Keats House Young Poets Forum.
During the workshop they will be challenged to develop their own spoken word pieces inspired by the themes of the exhibition.
This is a fabulous opportunity for aspiring or established young spoken word artists to gain exposure with their peers, build confidence and learn public performance skills.

Don’t miss Get the Greedy today!
Get the Greedy, a play about a girl who ran away because her mum had been sectioned and she didn’t want to be taken into care, is being performed the Arcola Theatre on 16 and 17 February 2012.
It is written by Jonathon Wright and it was created by a group of young people around Hackney who came together and improvised to create the play.
They have been preparing for this play since Christmas and now they are ready to perform on the stage at the Arcola Theatre.
Jonathon told us he got into writing through a recommendation. He’s feeling good about the performance because he has seen it and acted in it.
It’s being performed today at the Arcola Theatre at 2pm. Find out more.

Akala speaks out at Alter Ego
Akala, one of London’s most talented music artists, appeared at Hackney Empire on Friday 3 February with a message for Hackney’s young people: don’t beleive the hype.
The conscious rapper struck the audience with his powerful lyrics as he performed one of his most influential songs to a full house of 13 to 19 year olds at Alter Ego, the opening event of Discover Young Hackney.

Blue Hut BLOG post
Hi, we are members of the Blue Hut Youth Club in Hoxton and we’re putting together a radio show reporting on Discover Young Hackney 2012. This is a really exciting project and the podcasts will be up on Roundhouse Radio and Discover Young Hackney soon – so make sure you keep an eye out for them!
On the project we’re learning radio production techniques, editing and how to prepare radio scripts. Last week we went to the ‘Alter Ego’ talent final at the Hackney Empire to interview everyone from the performers to the organisers. One of the best parts of our role was recording interviews, we got to meet lots of new people and enjoyed the experience. We also learned never to judge a book by its cover – any one can be talented in any sort of way. The talent on the night was amazing and the winner Tolu was really good and a deserving winner.
Make sure you keep checking the Discover Young Hackney website….our first report will be coming soon with a special report on the ‘Alter Ego’ talent final, including live recordings and interviews with some of the performers!
Enjoy the rest of Discover Young Hackney 2012!
