Discover Young Hackney '09 came to a close at Ocean on 12 March 2009
The first ever DYH close event was an amazing opportunity to look back on what young people had achieved this year and, more importantly, look to the future of where we would like to see youth arts in Hackney moving. The festival has proved beyond doubt that talent is here in the borough.
Now it is vital we keep the momentum going and things moving forward.
Mayor, Jules Pipe, very kindly showed his support for the festival by opening the event and he congratulated all of the cultural ambassadors that helped shape the festival, along with the festival providers.
An interactive forum discussed ways of shaping the future of youth arts in Hackney. These discussions were focused around three specific questions:
- How can we encourage innovation in the arts for young people? And, in turn, how can young people develop entrepreneurial behaviour?
- What do young people gain from taking part in the arts, and how can we ensure that everybody is able to engage?
- Popular culture or high art? Does it matter as long as it is enjoyable?
To find out what came out of these discussions please follow their links to the relevant blog. AND if you would like to add to the debate please click on the comments button beneath the relevant question to leave your feedback.
Now in its third year, Discover Young Hackney has already touched the lives of almost 7,000 young people. 23 organisations have taken part this year, and the activities have been broader and more inclusive than ever.
The two-month long programme offered free taster sessions, workshops and events in music, dance, art, film, theatre, storytelling, media, fashion and design. Thousands of young people aged 11 to 19 had the chance to experience different art forms outside school hours. The programme also opened up pathways for budding talent, through events like professional behind-the-scenes workshops and sessions on media promotion. As an example, the London College of Fashion helped young people with an interest in fashion to progress onto the college’s foundation course and helped raise the expectations about college life for younger students.
