How does the Line up happen?

As part of our commiment to helping you access the arts we thought we should give you an idea as to how the festival is planned and produced. So the first thing you might be wondering is how do we select and programme the events?

DYH works on a commissioning basis: this means that we fund, provide money for (by way of small grants), arts organisations from all over Hackney to provide free taster sessions for young people. These organisations are already working really hard to bring arts to young people, all year round. DYH is here to celebrate that work and tell even more young people about what is out there for them.

The applications are in: after we received the applications for these small grants we took them to the young people at Hackney’s Youth Opportunities Fund, they then made skilled decisions and gave valuable recommendations on events they thought we should include. They looked at the health and safety of the events, how appropriate the events were for different ages of young people, whether we should charge money for events and how we should go about advertising the events. After speaking to them we were better informed as to which events we should fund, their contribution has been nothing short of priceless... so we want to offer them a big thank you for all their invaluable input.

The good news: after that meeting we went back to the office and gave the good news to the arts organisations we were able to fund and include in the programme.

Keep posted for more updates and insights on how a festival like DYH '09 is produced including how we came up with the design of the brochure....

Disability Access - One Festival for Everyone

Disability Access - One Festival for Everyone

Discover Young Hackney aims to make it easier for young people between 11 and 19 to access and participate in local arts and cultural activities by removing physical, social, cultural and financial barriers.

DYH '09 have been talking to Shape, the national disability arts organisation, to help remove barriers that prevent deaf or disabled people from taking part in all kinds of arts activities. We'd like to thank Shape for all their advice and guidance, www.shapearts.org.uk

Access Champions: We want to make sure that we are as honest and helpful as possible for all your access requirements. That's why, this year, we have introduced '
Access Champions' for each event, so if you think you might need help to attend please contact them and they will talk through anything that you might be worried about.

Last week Shape provided a training session for all of the organisations offering free events for DYH '09. This is so that they can be better prepared to help you take part.

Look out for DYH '09 events that are specifically designed to be inclusive and accessible events:

- ‘I’m In’ – DYH launch event at the Hackney Empire, BSL interpreted.

- Stories of a London Township led by SPACE, BSL interpreted.

- Wet Sounds led by Newtoy, open to everyone.

- Play in a Day led by Hackney Shed Youth Theatre, open to everyone.

This does not mean that other events are not accessible, we understand that there could be all sorts of reasons why you might be worried about taking part. Please contact the Access Champion for any event you are interested in. They are there for you and will do their best to help.
