How does the Line up happen?

As part of our commiment to helping you access the arts we thought we should give you an idea as to how the festival is planned and produced. So the first thing you might be wondering is how do we select and programme the events?

DYH works on a commissioning basis: this means that we fund, provide money for (by way of small grants), arts organisations from all over Hackney to provide free taster sessions for young people. These organisations are already working really hard to bring arts to young people, all year round. DYH is here to celebrate that work and tell even more young people about what is out there for them.

The applications are in: after we received the applications for these small grants we took them to the young people at Hackney’s Youth Opportunities Fund, they then made skilled decisions and gave valuable recommendations on events they thought we should include. They looked at the health and safety of the events, how appropriate the events were for different ages of young people, whether we should charge money for events and how we should go about advertising the events. After speaking to them we were better informed as to which events we should fund, their contribution has been nothing short of priceless... so we want to offer them a big thank you for all their invaluable input.

The good news: after that meeting we went back to the office and gave the good news to the arts organisations we were able to fund and include in the programme.

Keep posted for more updates and insights on how a festival like DYH '09 is produced including how we came up with the design of the brochure....
